Past, Present & Future Spread

The most famous spread in tarot. Hold your situation in mind and draw three cards.

Take a breath, hold your question in your mind, and draw when you feel ready.

Reading the three positions

The past card names the root — the decision, wound or win that set your current situation in motion. Don't skim it: recognising the root is often the most clarifying part of the whole reading. The present card is the centre of gravity; whatever it describes is the thing genuinely asking for your attention this week, even if your mind keeps wandering to something shinier.

The future card is a trajectory, not a sentence. It answers: if the present-card energy keeps running the show, where does this land?A difficult future card next to a passive present card is the deck telling you to act; a glowing future card is telling you the boring, steady thing you're doing is working — keep going.

For a quick verdict instead, try yes/no tarot; for matters of the heart, the love spread reads the same three-card idea through a romantic lens. And when you want a real human to untangle something messy, our professional reader does full personal readings by email.

Three-card spread FAQs

What does each position mean?
PAST: the energy or event that shaped your current situation — often something you're still carrying. PRESENT: the heart of the matter right now, the card to weigh most heavily. FUTURE: where the current trajectory leads if nothing changes — a forecast, not a verdict. You can always change course.
Is the future card set in stone?
No — and that's the point. The future position shows the destination of the road you're currently on. If you like it, keep going. If you don't, the present card usually shows exactly which behaviour or situation to change.
What question should I hold in mind?
Anything with a timeline: a career move, a relationship, a project, a decision you've been circling. The vaguer the question, the vaguer the reading — 'How is my job search developing?' beats 'What about work?'
Why only Major Arcana cards?
Our deck uses the 22 Major Arcana — the cards of life's big themes and turning points. For an everyday three-card pull they give clearer, punchier answers than a full 78-card deck, where minor cards can muddy a short spread.
