How astrological compatibility works
Astrology reads compatibility through three stacked layers. The first is element: the twelve signs divide into fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Fire and air feed each other — enthusiasm meets ideas — while earth and water do the same in a quieter register, structure meeting feeling. Same-element pairs understand each other instantly but can amplify shared blind spots; cross-element pairs like fire–water generate the famous "steam" — friction that becomes fascination when handled well.
The second layer is modality — how a sign acts. Cardinal signs initiate, fixed signs sustain, mutable signs adapt. Two cardinals fight for the wheel; two fixed signs can gridlock; a cardinal–fixed pair divides leading and finishing beautifully. The third layer is the aspect between the signs: how many steps apart they sit on the wheel. Trines (four apart) flow effortlessly, squares (three apart) generate productive tension, and oppositions (six apart) attract magnetically because each holds what the other lacks.
