Mercury Retrograde: What It Actually Means
A few times a year the internet collectively blames its problems on Mercury retrograde. But what is it really, and should you care?
What's actually happening
Mercury never truly moves backward. Retrograde is an optical illusion: from Earth, Mercury appears to move backward across the sky for about three weeks, three to four times a year. Astrologically, Mercury rules communication, technology, travel and contracts — so its retrograde is associated with hiccups in exactly those areas.
What it's blamed for
- ✦Texts that get misread and conversations that go sideways
- ✦Tech glitches, lost files, travel delays
- ✦Signing things you later regret
The healthier framing
Retrograde isn't a curse — it's an invitation to do the "re-" things: review, revise, reflect, reconnect. It's a poor time to launch and a great time to finish, edit, and tie up loose ends.
How to actually handle it
- ✦Back up your devices and double-check important messages.
- ✦Build in buffer time for travel.
- ✦Avoid signing major contracts if you can wait — or read the fine print twice.
- ✦Reconnect with people and projects you'd set aside.
Don't put your life on hold. Just slow down, re-read, and give yourself grace.
