How to Read Your Birth Chart: A Beginner's Guide
A birth chart (or natal chart) is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It looks like a wheel covered in symbols — but once you know the three building blocks, it reads like a sentence.
The three building blocks
Every placement in your chart is a combination of:
- A planet — what energy is at play (e.g. Venus = love, Mars = drive).
- A sign — how that energy expresses (e.g. Venus in Scorpio loves intensely).
- A house — where in life it shows up (e.g. the 10th house = career).
Read them together: "Venus in Scorpio in the 7th house" = intense, all-in love (Venus in Scorpio) in committed partnerships (7th house).
Start with the personal planets
Don't try to read everything at once. Begin with the inner planets, which shape your personality most:
- ✦Sun — identity · Moon — emotions · Rising — your outward self
- ✦Mercury — how you think and talk
- ✦Venus — how you love and what you value
- ✦Mars — drive, anger, desire
Then the houses
The wheel is split into 12 houses, each ruling a life area — self, money, communication, home, romance, work, partnership, and so on. Notice which houses are crowded with planets: that's where your life energy concentrates.
Finally, the aspects
Aspects are the angles between planets — conjunctions, trines, squares, oppositions. They show how your inner parts get along (or argue). Squares create tension and growth; trines flow easily.
