Chinese Zodiac vs Western Zodiac: What's the Difference?

May 21, 2026·5 min read

Both are called "the zodiac," but the Western and Chinese systems work completely differently.

Western zodiac — based on the month

The Western zodiac assigns your sign by the position of the Sun at your birth, giving twelve signs across the year (Aries to Pisces). It's rooted in the constellations along the ecliptic and updates monthly.

Chinese zodiac — based on the year

The Chinese zodiac assigns an animal based on your birth year in a repeating 12-year cycle — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. It's tied to the lunar calendar and Chinese astrology's elements and yin/yang.

Which is "right"?

Neither is more correct — they answer different questions. Western astrology maps your personality and timing in fine detail (your birth chart has hundreds of data points); the Chinese zodiac gives a broad, year-based archetype. Many people enjoy both.
